LASHBURN, Saskatchewan — Zane Lambert won last night’s 11th Annual Brad Phipps Memorial PBR in Lashburn, SK after scores of 86 and 88.5 to earn nearly $4,000 in prize money. At 7:00pm however, things weren’t looking too good weather wise.
“I don’t like riding in the rain but it’s part of the sport. There’s days you don’t feel like doing it but when you’re a professional you’ve gotta do it and go out and play in the rain,” Lambert said after the event.
The fans in Lashburn didn’t take a day off either, they are often years the best in the entire PBR in Canada.
“There were some fans that security kicked out when it started pouring. They were gonna stay the whole time. After the rain stopped they all came back out and it was awesome. It was full even for a rainy night.”
Despite the slight rain delay, the event went off without a hitch. The weather held up for the afternoon’s events as well which featured the annual golf tournament and steak supper. There aren’t many events that put this much extra into what surrounds them, there aren’t many that have raised over $300,000 for their community either.
“The committee is so personal, I’ve got to know the people that put this event on. Thinking back I think I’ve been here 10 years out of the 11 now,” Lambert remembered. “I’ve never won here before. I came second a few years back. I’ve rode here, had some good luck and some bad luck.”
“It’s pretty cool to finally win it. It’s one of the toughest bull ridings to win all year. It means a lot to win an event like this,” said Lambert.
The win came on the back of a familiar foe, Bucking Fantastic from the Two Bit Nation, a bull he’s faced five times now and ridden twice.
“He was everything but wild and waspy there today. He just about got me on the ground right out of there and then I ended up getting back in shape, made the whistle. Shoot it was good it worked out for a big score,” Lambert finished.
In the long go he also had the best ride with an 86 on Smoke Show from Vold Rodeo. A win here in Lashburn sets him up well before he heads back to the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series next weekend in Tulsa, OK.
As has been the story for the past five weeks, Adam Jamison stayed on his bulls again and got a big check. After an 81.5 on Jawbreaker in the long go Jamison matched up with First Buckle from Chris Hansen and Rafter 8 Bucking Bulls. The result was one of the first scores on the brindle bull.
Third on the evening went to a pair of 85.5’s from the long go. Scott Schiffner put up the first one on Two Bit’s Mambo #5.
Budd Williamson earned the other one as the last man out in the long go on Vold Rodeo’s Indian Turtle. Each bull rider took home a bit more than $1,300.
Rounding out the top five was North Dakota Bull Rider Nathan Schaper with his 85 on Devil’s Wing also from Two Bit Bucking Bulls. Schaper was drawn back to the short round on time, luckily last night it worked out to his advantage.
Taryl Smith might have had a long ride home sitting on his keester after taking a horn between the legs. The good news for him is the landing wasn’t too bad.
Thanks again to Trevor Beaton, the event committee and the Phipps Family for another outstanding event in Lashburn in Memory of Brad Phipps. We look forward to coming back again next year!
